The Name Varanasi was given to the city by adding the names of two holy rivers Varana and Asi which meets the River Ganges within 6 miles. The City was first called as Kasi which means " where the supreme light shines". Varanasi is considered as the cultural and religious capital of India. The city is considered as one of the Seven Holy Cities, One of the twelve Jyotirlinga Site and also a Sakthi Pitha site, and therefore is the most favored place for Hindus. Varanasi is known for having around 23000 temples and the most popular one is Kasi Vishwanath Temple of Shiva, Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple and the 18th Centaury Durga Kund Temple.

Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta and Bhagwan Das established the university in Varanasi on 10th February 1921, during the non-cooperation movement of the freedom struggle. Kashi Vidyapith university was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in 1995. Kashi Vidyapith was the action field of the Indian National Movement & a pilgrimage for the Socialists
