The tour to Salzkammergut started with a trip from Vienna to Gmunden, home of the beautiful Gmundner ceramics. Here, our first highlight awaited us: Idyllic Orth castle, located on a tiny island on the Traunsee lake.

Then we traveled onward to Hallstatt, a historic town that has been photographed a million times – and even replicated. Nestled between the lake and the mountainside, the town will charm you with its narrow lanes and unique wooden buildings.

On the included city walk, we learned about the 7,000-year history of Hallstatt; the mighty salt caves that were the foundation of the region's wealth. One of the highlights of the Hallstatt tour is, without a doubt, the ossuary, where hand-painted skulls recall a nearly forgotten tradition.

The included boat tour gave us a wonderful view of Hallstatt from the lake, after which we had some free time for lunch or more sightseeing. We regrouped at the Salzbergbahn, the funicular that took us up to the Skywalk viewing platform, from where we had a breathtaking view of Hallstatt and the lake from above. Afterwards, the bus tour concluded with a ride back to Vienna.
