SESIóN 6 - 16 de mayo de 2017, "Visualizing and Exhibiting Jewish Space and History: Jewish Museums in Transition"

Descripción: La sesión de clausura trata aspectos de la auto-representación judía mediante el análisis de la creciente presencia de museos judíos en Europa y en los Estados Unidos en el periodo post-Holocausto. De manera clara, los museos judíos se han convertido en un aspecto aceptado del espacio público en muchos países y ciudades, y como tales, en importantes intérpretes de la vida judía, pasada y presente, y un medio principal para transmitir el conocimiento de la experiencia judía, pasada y presente. La conferencia trata de analizar el fenómeno de los museos judíos en contexto, al lado de los museos de otras «minorías», o bien museos especializados, de los esfuerzos para construirlos en lugares donde no existen comunidades judías, de las narrativas que guían estos museos y las controversias que han rodeado alguno de ellos, y de las agendas sociales e ideológicas que los han acompañado en las generaciones pasadas.

Description: The final lecture treats aspects of Jewish self-representation by looking at the growing presence of Jewish museums in the post-Holocaust period in Europe and the United States. Clearly, Jewish museums have become an accepted aspect of the public space in many countries and cities, and as such have become important nterpreters of Jewish life, past and present, and a major medium for transmitting knowledge on Jewish existence, past and present. The lecture places the phenomenon of Jewish museums in context with other "minority" museums, or "special issues" museums, the struggles to build them in places where Jewish communities are non-existent, the narratives that guide the museums, the controversies that have surrounded some of them, and the social and ideological agendas that have accompanied them in past generations.
