Walking Tour Vienna Austria Schwedenplatz to Stephansplatz, Opera Vienna

Along with Graben, Kärntner Strasse is one of the most well-known streets in downtown Vienna. It begins at Karlsplatz or Friedrichstrasse and leads past the Vienna State Opera straight to the center of Vienna, Stephansplatz and St. Stephen's Cathedral. There the pedestrian zone continues in a westerly direction from Graben. Rotenturmstraße, which leads to the Danube Canal, connects to the north-east after Stephansplatz.

The Innere Stadt (German pronunciation: [ˈɪnərə ʃtat] (listen); Central Bavarian: Innare Stod) is the 1st municipal district of Vienna (German: 1. Bezirk) located in the center of the Austrian capital. The Innere Stadt is the old town of Vienna. Until the city boundaries were expanded in 1850, the Innere Stadt was congruent with the city of Vienna. Traditionally it was divided into four quarters, which were designated after important town gates: Stubenviertel (northeast), Kärntner Viertel (southeast), Widmerviertel (southwest), Schottenviertel (northwest).[2]

The Ringstraße circles the Innere Stadt along the route of the former city walls.

The first district is, with a workforce of 100,745, the largest employment locale in Vienna. This is partially due to tourism, as well as the presence of many corporate headquarters due to the district's central location.

The Stephansplatz is a square at the geographical centre of Vienna. It is named after its most prominent building, the Stephansdom, Vienna's cathedral and one of the tallest churches in the world. Before the 20th century, a row of houses separated Stephansplatz from Stock-im-Eisen-Platz,[1] but since their destruction, the name Stephansplatz started to be used for the wider area covering both. To the west and south, respectively, run the exclusive shopping streets Graben (literally "ditch") and Kärntner Straße ("Kärnten" is the German for Carinthia). Opposite the Stephansdom is the Haas-Haus, a piece of striking modern architecture by Hans Hollein. Although public opinion was originally skeptical about the combination of the mediaeval cathedral and the glass and steel building, it is now considered an example of how old and new architecture can mix harmoniously .
History:
Before 1850, Innere Stadt was physically equivalent with the city of Vienna. See History of Vienna for details about the history of Vindobona and Vienna, as well as historical significance after 1850. On November 2, 2020, a shooting occurred in the municipality at 6 locations, killing 4 people and injuring 22 at 20:00.
