Salzburg is a city in Austria, located in the western part of the country, close to the German border. It is the birthplace of the great Mozart and one of Europe's most famous cultural centres, attracting millions of tourists who want to experience the magical atmosphere of baroque, music and art. Salzburg is a unique city, a blend of spectacular natural scenery, outstanding historic architecture, art and culture, as well as tradition and modernity.
Salzburg was founded by Bishop Ruppert, later to be canonised as a saint. Around 700, he founded two monasteries that have survived to this day - the Benedictine abbey of St Peter's for men and the Nonnberg convent for women. Salzburg got its present name in the late VII century because of the numerous salt deposits in the area (Salz - salt in German). For centuries, Salzburg was the seat of the archbishops and remained a sovereign principality. It was only with the outbreak of the Napoleonic wars that the Principality came to an end and was finally ruled by Austria in 1816.
The whole world knows Salzburg as the birthplace of a brilliant composer and musician. The people of Salzburg cherish his memory. The house where Mozart was born (Mozarts Geburtshaus) now houses a museum. One can see Mozart's childhood and concert violins, a clavichord, and a hammer clavier, as well as portraits and letters from his family. Another small museum is located in the house where Mozart lived from 1773 to 1780. A large number of authentic interior furnishings, antique musical instruments, and personal belongings of the musician and his family create the atmosphere of the time.
