Yes you heard us correctly, kind of.
After traveling across the world and encountering MANY bumps in the road on the way there, we finally arrived in Salzburg, Austria. Then, as if the stress of getting there wasn’t enough, we got kicked out of the place we were suppose to stay in for an entire month after being in the country for only 5 days! There’s a lot to the story, so we will do our best to explain it to you.
Alright here is the full story from the very beginning. (We also explain everything in the video so if you don’t want to read it just go watch lol) In June of 2021 a friend of Christian’s reached out and said that they were so excited for us to begin traveling and if we ever were in Austria we were welcome to stay with them. Two months later we reached back out and asked if this offer was still on the table, we were honestly just looking into options since we weren’t sure where we were going to begin our international travels at.
Christian’s friend responded back in a way we were really not expecting, we were prepared for the “Oh I am so sorry I don’t think that will work out anymore” excuse after someone offers something they didn’t think would actually happen, you know? But instead the response we got was “Yes you are more than welcome to come stay with me! I may go home for Christmas but you can stay all of November and December! I am so excited I will show you all around Austria”.
This response got us excited, REALLY EXCITED! Not only did they offer something incredible, but it was legit! We had a solid option for where to start our travels and Austria was looking good. We took them up on their offer, agreeing on staying for a month, and planed our travels around starting in Europe. (This was not the original plan since we can’t really afford Europe, but Asia is on lockdown to travelers and we had a free place to stay now).
Immediately after arriving in Austria, things were looking bleak. We met up with Christian’s friend and were told that we would be staying in an apartment on the top floor of their aunt’s house. This was no problem for us until they mentioned that their aunt wasn’t too thrilled to have visitors….? We were very confused at this point. Did they not tell their aunt they offered the place up to someone for two months? That we agreed to stay for an entire month? Our worry was met with the encouraging words of “don’t worry, once she meets you guys everything will be fine! She just needs to make sure you aren’t weirdos or something you know?”
Our first two days in the house were great. We met their aunt and she seemed to like us a lot, they even told us she said so. We enjoyed exploring the city and trying Austrian food for those first two days and were ready for an amazing month. Then, on Monday morning (we landed there Friday night) we ran into their aunt in the front yard on our way out to explore. We thanked her for allowing us to stay with her and told her the place was beautiful. She responded with “oh yes of course. And when will you be leaving?” There was a bluntness about the way she asked that we were taken back for a moment. We replied, “Well your niece said we could stay for the month so we planned on leaving then..” She seemed confused and let us know she had friends visiting this weekend and we needed to be out of the house by Wednesday. TWO DAYS AWAY!
This left us homeless starting in two days and we had no plan of where to go or how to afford it. We searched high and low for an affordable Airbnb but everything we could afford was far outside the city and would have added up with train ticket costs and become too much to handle. We accepted the fact that we may have to leave to a more affordable country so we looked into Croatia and got ready to go, we booked our bus tickets and Airbnb and Christian’s friend helped us find options.
This may sound like a lot of complaining but the stress we were under, the anger of being told one thing and then being so miserably let down, the fear of missing trains and buses, the frustration and complete bewilderment we felt towards this person who had us fly halfway across the world without asking their aunt if it was ok first…. We were ready to break down and cry. We wanted to quit.
We are now in Croatia and loving every minute of it, so our Vlogs will be much more lighthearted and happy from here on out!
