The European Union says Spain must have a direct say in Gibraltar’s future in upcoming negotiations with Britain over its exit from the bloc.
According to draft negotiating guidelines presented by President of European Council Donald Tusk, no agreement between the EU and the UK may apply to the territory without the agreement between Britain and Spain. In essence, it offers Madrid a special share of power over Gibraltar's fate. Spain has welcomed the decision while the government of Gibraltar slammed the move. Madrid and London have been engaged in a bitter sovereignty row over the territory for years, holding up entire EU deals in the past. Spain ceded the rocky enclave to Britain in 1713, but has been trying to get it back.
