It really is still possible to be Far from the Madding Crowd in rural Dorset. Thomas Hardy used the towns and villages he knew and loved for the backdrop to his novels and poetry and we follow in his footsteps to find a landscape where little has changed in a century or more. We hike quiet lanes, past thatched cottages and through delightful villages, market towns and tiny harbors. We visit a traditional family brewery and taste the ale! We get a magnificent view from the sea of the 185 million years of the earths history in the stunning Jurassic Coast cliffs and coast.

In this video, the Wayfarers are treated to a poetry recital from John Challis, of William Barnes' works in the Dorset dialect, recorded at The Bridge House Hotel in Beaminster.

One of the highlights of the Walk is a tour of the house and gardens of Mapperton, Bathsheba Everdene's farm in the blockbuster movie 'Far From the Madding Crowd' (2015). Mapperton is home to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich and dates back to the 1540s.

While in Lyme Regis, there is a chance to walk along The Cobb, where The French Lieutenant's Woman spent most of her time looking out to sea. At Abbotsbury Swannery, we get the opportunity to help feed the world's only managed colony of nesting mute swans. We also visit the home of Thomas Hardy, Max Gate in Dorchester.
