A protest greeted Minister Damien English in Limerick today as he attended an event in the Strand Hotel. We demanded that the government drop their plans to appeal the Apple Tax judgment and instead use the €13bn plus due to the state to build social housing.
Apple have been ordered to pay the Irish state €13bn, plus interest, in unpaid taxes. This is more than enough money to build a house for each and every person and family on the housing waiting list. However, instead the Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, supported by Labour and Independents seem to want to hand that money back to Apple, to boost their off shore cash reserves of almost €200bn.
Instead of appealing this decision, and trying to hand the money back, the government should take as much of the money to invest in housing and other public services. We have a housing crisis in this country, and instead of actually building the over 100,000 social and affordable houses needed on the various council-owned lands, they want to sell off 70% of those lands.

This is the top table at a council event today about dealing with the housing crisis. Sitting up there were ministers, councillors, auctioneers, officials all represented, but not a single tenant, young person, woman or person on the housing waiting list amongst them. As you'd expect the proposals were all geared to the needs of wealthy middle aged med in suits: tax cuts for developers, lowering building standards, reducing tenants rights etc. My call for rent controls, and for details as to where they will actually build houses was not even acknowledge or answered.
