Snow Biking at Pension Haus Maria

Have you ever wished you could ski but can't. Snow Bikes, Ski Bikes or Ski Bobs are a great way to get on the piste in no time at all.

Most people get the hang of it after around 20 minutes and you can soon be enjoying the mountains. Blue runs are like a ride through the park and soon you will be ready to tackle the Reds. Blacks on the other hand are best left to the experts.

A lifetime of injuries left me unable to ski anymore. In fact I had not skied for around 25 years when we moved here from the UK. We did try to take it up again but it was never going to be. We longed to get in to the mountains in winter and then we discovered Snow Biking.

Initially we hired our Brenter Snow Bikes from Ski School Amadeus on Galsterberg. The first time you hire Brenter Snow Bikes from an authorised rental establishment, training is included. They make sure you know how to move about on the foot skis, teach you to ride and also how to use the Drag, Chair and Gondola Lifts.

Because you are using Foot Skis, here in Austria you can use any of the lift systems. Other types of Snow Bike are ridden feet up. This can be an issue on Drag and Chair Lifts and it is down to the Lift Company in question as to whether you can use the systems or not.

We have taken a number of guests who have had no previous winter sports experience Snow Biking and they took to it straight away.

As some one who suffers badly with knees, hips and back I can honestly say that the Brenter Snow Bikes are very kind on the joints. We have been bitten by the Snow Biking Bug and have now purchased our own.

We are lucky here at Pension Haus Maria in that we have a lovely training slope a few hundred meters from us at the Feistererhof Hotel. Serviced by a Button Drag Lift it is perfect for practice or when we only have a short time to spare. Likewise it is perfect for all of our guests, especially beginners and children looking for a safe environment to practice in. Skiing, snowboarding, sledging and of course Snow Bikes are all permitted to use the lift and slope.

We are blessed with much sunshine here in Ramsau and as such the season on The Feisterer Slope is shorter than in the surrounding mountains. In this video the snow was quite soft and patchy off piste but the staff do a great job keeping it serviceable for as long as possible. Fortunately more snow is forecast and there should be a few more weeks left at least.

This is a private lift and not part of any Ski Pass so you can pay by the trip, hour, day or part thereof and it really is good value.
