Donald Trump's campaign chairman, and former campaign manager Paul Manafort has been a key player in multi-million-dollar business deals with Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs, one of them a close Putin ally with alleged ties to organized crime. Experts in foreign policy say Manafort's ties to the motherland raises questions about the decided pro-Russian bent of the Trump candidacy.
According to court records, in 2008 a Ukrainian oligarch named Dmytro Firtash had invested in a plan by senior Trump aide Paul Manafort's firm to redevelop a famous New York hotel, the Drake. The total value of the project was $850 million, and records show that Firtash's company was poised to invest over $100 million.
Firtash was indicted by the Justice Department six years later in 2014 over bribery allegations in India. He is now living in exile in Austria.
