During the Second World War, as the Nazis and the German Army rampaged across Europe they captured many historic locations and fortifications along the way. A number of these incredible castles were repurposed by the Nazis and were used in a variety of different ways. For example Colditz Castle was transformed into a brutal and tough Prisoner of War camp, which became notable for its difficulty to escape from. Also there was Neuschwanstein Castle which is one of the world's most beautiful, but this was used also as a place to hide stolen loot art and treasure. It was later raided by the monuments men, with some of the possessions returned.

However there were some castles that became used for the horrors of the Nazi regime, for example Hartheim Castle was a site of mass killing. A number of these castles also marked the sites of brutal battles, as the Allies sought to take control of them, and Castle Itter saw one of the most bizarre battles of World War 2, with the Allies teaming up with some Wehrmacht soldiers to defeat the SS. Many of these castles had their histories changed forever by the Nazis.
