Travel video about destination Benedictine abbey in Melk Austria.
Benedictine Abbey in Melk - a complex of abbey buildings of the Benedictine Order, located in Melk, Austria.
The abbey was built in the Middle Ages on the site of an earlier fortification. A small part of these defensive structures was incorporated into the monastery complex, an example of which is the Babenberg tower. In the fifteenth century, the local monks initiated reforms within the Benedictine Order, proclaiming a return to the original doctrine of St. Benedict and gaining recognition of the church authorities, which was expressed, among others, by recognition of the organization of the community in Melk as exemplary by Pope Urban VIII. Monastery and church of St. Peter and St. Paul was subjected to a thorough baroqueization and expansion in the eighteenth century, as a result of which one of the largest baroque religious complexes in Europe was created, considered the most beautiful example of Baroque in Austria. The initiator of this expansion was Abbot Berthold Dietmayr.
The fine buildings of the Benedictine monastery of Melk majestically rise up from a plateau above the fascinating town on the River Danube. The elegant, yellow buildings of the monastery have become well-known far beyond Austria. The monastery’s eighteen hundred manuscripts are extremely valuable and although many treasures were destroyed by a devastating fire the oldest texts date back to the early 9th century. The 18th century marked the beginning of extensive construction work in the monastery that subsequently transformed the church into an enchanting example of Baroque design. The exquisite design of the church’s splendid interior was mostly the work of Italian architect, Antonio Beduzzi. But it is the remarkable architecture of the central Baroque buildings that have given Melk its reputation as being an icon of occidental monastery culture.
