A walking tour in Curon Venosta, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Located at the northwestern end of the province, it borders to the north - through the Resia Pass - with Austria, to the west with Switzerland and to the south with Malles Venosta. Together with the latter municipality, Courmayeur and Tarvisio it is one of the four Italian municipalities to border with two foreign states. The municipality of Curon is often mistakenly called "Resia" (Reschen), due to the popularity of the hamlet of the same name.
In its territory there is the lake of Resia, an artificial lake for the production of hydroelectric energy, whose construction caused the disappearance of the ancient town of Curon, which was rebuilt further upstream (1950). Only the bell tower of the old church continues to emerge from the waters, so much so that it has become one of the main attractions of the village.
In 2009 the last restoration of the structure was carried out (in January 2020): in May the water level of the lake was slightly lowered with temporary embankments in order to allow interventions on the submerged areas, subject to water infiltration and winter frosts that had caused cracks and instability. The roof was also restored, for the first time since 1899 (as shown by the date imprinted on the tiles). The total cost of the restoration, which ended on 9 July 2009, was around € 130,000.
The town, with its submerged bell tower, is chosen as the setting for a Netflix series, entitled Curon.
