Austria ends lockdown measures, reopens all shops

(2 May 2020) Most Austrian businesses, excluding restaurants and hotels, reopened on Saturday, as the central European country eased its coronavirus lockdown.
Shops were officially allowed to reopen on Friday, a public holiday in Austria.
Bernhard Plasil-Ossig, a hairdresser in Vienna's upmarket first district, said he was fully booked for the entire month.
"We are very happy that we can reopen. This was a long and hard time," he said, adding that the salon had been shut for almost eight weeks.
In order to comply with the new hygiene and safety measures, all staff members as well as customers have to wear masks.
Additionally, chairs need to be spaced out, so they are at least one metre (3 ft) apart.
Despite the measures, he fears a second wave of infections this autumn.
"I am sure that no business right now would survive such a scenario again. (...) This isn't over yet!" he warned.
Customers on Saturday also returned to the city's pedestrianised Mariahilfer Strasse shopping thoroughfare.
Franchise owner of clothing chain Mango, Guenther Rossmanith, said he was happy "the competition disadvantage (was) gone now," as smaller shops had been permitted to reopen three weeks earlier.
"Now we all hope that business will restart faster than maybe expected."
Restaurants will be allowed to reopen on 15 May followed by hotels on 29 May.
According to the John Hopkins University, Austria has recorded 15,531 COVID-19 cases and 589 deaths.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
