(16 Nov 2020) With Austria about to enter a second lockdown, Viennese hit the capital's shopping streets one last time on Monday before shops close for the rest of the month.
Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said strict measures became necessary once again after Austria saw a weekly average of 550 new cases of coronavirus per 100,000 people, a level 11 times greater than what authorities said would be sustainable.
Starting Tuesday, the country of almost nine million inhabitants will impose a limited curfew, banning people from leaving their homes except for going to work, getting essential supplies, exercising and helping people who need assistance.
The partial lockdown is set to last until December 6.
In addition to restaurants and leisure facilities, which have been shut for almost two weeks, authorities in Austria are ordering the closure of hairdressers, sports facilities and libraries.
