Austria president offer to help solve EU/ Switzerland dispute

(9 Jan 2018) Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen on Tuesday promised that Vienna would try to find a solution to a current dispute between the European Union and Switzerland.
Speaking at a news conference alongside Swiss counterpart Alain Berset, Van der Bellen said he was surprised by the EU commission's decision to grant the Swiss stock exchange only temporary access to the EU market.
The move is widely seen as an attempt by the EU to pressure Switzerland to agree to a framework agreement tackling many different topics.
Not having access to the European stock market could have far reaching consequences for the Swiss economy.
Berset is currently on an official state visit in Austria, and during Tuesday's news conference, also commented on the tensions between the United States and Iran.
"We are watching what is happening very closely," he said.
