A Vienna-based start-up has been preparing to launch a "do it yourself (DIY)" COVID-19 test aimed as simplifying gathering for large events.

Veit-Ander Aichbichler and virologist Christoph Steininger, both involved in "testFRWD" project gave statements on Friday regarding the aims of Vienna-based startup to launch what they said was the world's first DIY coronavirus testing sets. The main goal of the project is offering a solution to the tourism and event industry, that have been hit hard by the pandemic.

DIY COVID-19 testing kit is the first product of this kind that is certified and accepted by governments and authorities. It consists of a coronavirus gargling test and a phone app, where a person undergoing the testing can do an online identity-check and get the test results once they are finished in the lab.

"With our test solution that people may have a box, which they take home - do the test at home, send it in or get it collected. Tests results will be available within a maximum of 24 hours," explained virologist and partner of a start-up Christoph Steininge, adding that gargling tests are offering an excellent alternative to nasopharyngeal swabs.

"Swabs have the disadvantage that they are very sensitive to the test person. So if an examiner does not do it very deeply, the swab is not reliable and at the same time, we are already seen in many cases of complications like injuries to a nose, just in a process of collecting the sample," he added, stressing that this way, people could easily and painlessly undergo self-testing, without necessarily needing the presence of medical personnel.

The idea is to make testing simple, quick, cheap and accessible for everybody as test kits are to be available in supermarkets, drug stores, pharmacies - "without waiting in lines, without having to gather in small rooms and waiting for sample extraction," said Veit-Ander Aichbichler, one of the team members.
