The Belvedere is a large and elegant palace complex in the Austrian capital. In the 18th century, one of the world's greatest military leaders, Eugene of Savoy, seriously thought of having a summer residence. Within a couple of years, the Lower Belvedere, built in Baroque style and adorned with frescoes, a marble gallery, several bedrooms, a grotesque hall and stables, was already entirely at Eugene's disposal.

It was designed by Lucas von Hildebrandt in the characteristic Baroque style. After the death of the owner, Maria Theresia, the eldest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, purchased the palace. In the 1770s Joseph II, son of the Queen and Empress, moved a huge collection of works of art to the Upper Palace, and on his instructions a catalogue was drawn up.

Since its construction, the architectural ensemble has remained virtually unchanged. Only the orangery adjacent to the Lower Belvedere was remodeled, and the menagerie outside the Upper Palace disappeared.

Upper Belvedere
The richly decorated palace was built in 1722 as a representative residence. Its halls housed an invaluable art collection assembled by the patron prince, Maria Theresa and her heir Joseph II. The Public Museum opened its doors in 1781, one of the first in the world. After 110 years the collection was moved to the Museum of Art and History and in 1896 the palace was given to the heir to the Austrian throne as a residence.

Today the halls contain works by Austrian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as by more modern painters. At the core of the collection and a source of pride are works by Gustav Klimt, the founder of Austrian Art Nouveau.

Lower Belvedere
The foundation of the Palace was laid out in 1714, and within two years it was ready for moving in. The prince's living quarters and halls were located here. During the French Revolution from 1789-99, royalty resided in the Lower Belvedere.
