The origins
The history of Bibione goes back a long way. Bibione was born from the sea and the history of its territory is linked to the sea: to that magical encounter between the salty waters of the Adriatic sea and the fresh waters of the Tagliamento river.History of water, therefore, but also history of land, the difficult one of the lagoon.A land that has seen different peoples pass over the centuries: the Venetians first, from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, and later, starting from 181 BC, the Romans, who first began the work of reclamation and arrangement of the territory.
With the fall of the Roman Empire and the advent of Christianity, Bibione passed between the possessions of the Bishop of Concordia and was abandoned for several centuries. Where there was no swamp or lagoon, the area thickened with scrub, wildlife, and horses in the wild.
Continuing its journey through history, Bibione tied its destiny first to France, then to Austria, which invaded the territory in 1798, re-conquered by Napoleon in 1805. It then became part of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom and then joined, in 1866 , to the Kingdom of Italy. And it was in this phase that the work begun by the Romans resumed: the reclamation of marshy land, aimed at making even this forgotten land healthier.
In fact, at the beginning of the 20th century, with the constitution of the Consortium, the first major works of reclamation, water channeling and construction of the embankments were undertaken. But, still considered a disadvantaged and inhospitable land, there were still very few families who lived there permanently, living on hunting, fishing and what little could be cultivated. Among the few buildings dating back to the 1930s, the Colony Marina was built thanks to the foresight of the doctor from San Michele al Tagliamento.
Hence the configuration of the luxuriant pine forests and that wide and beautiful beach, which we know today.
In the fifties, the start of construction of the first hotels, the first houses and shops, allowed the city to begin to open up to tourism.
In 1960 the name was made official: a name that comes back from the past, to identify the place where the "Insulae Bibioni" stood, those islands on the sea connected to the lagoon by a thin strip of land, of which the archaeological evidence today confirms the existence.

In those years Bibione was also officially recognized as a seaside area and already in 1961 it was mentioned in the general yearbook of the Touring Club.
There was a whole world that tried to start over, that was reborn and could dream. The dream was a beach holiday with the family, ice cream sitting on the wall, even just a Sunday trip, to catch the first rays of the sun. And Bibione, fifty years ago, began that journey at a steady pace that has led it to be today the second beach in Italy for arrivals and presences, a tourist destination known and appreciated internationally, able to offer great hospitality and excellent services .
