On September 16, 2024, the German government decided to impose controls on all its land borders. This includes borders with countries such as France, Poland, Austria, among others, which has caused a heated debate in Europe, because these measures by Europe's leading economy may change the future of the Schengen area and put the survival of the European Union in doubt. The Schengen area is an agreement implemented in 1995 that allows the free movement of people between the countries that are part of it. In other words, it removes the need for border controls between member states. This agreement has been one of the European Union's greatest achievements in terms of integration, making it easier not only for tourism but also for trade, labor mobility and economic integration.

The Schengen area currently includes 29 European countries. This means that more than 400 million people can travel freely between member countries without border controls. In addition, every day around 3.5 million people cross internal borders for work, study or tourism. However, the lack of border controls has also brought security concerns, especially in times of crisis. And the fact that Germany, the European powerhouse, has decided to introduce border controls is no small matter. So the questions are: Why is Germany imposing restrictions on its borders right now? Why has multiculturalism become unsustainable in Germany? And how can these measures threaten the future of the European Union?
