Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi stated that "there is not a single element that can justify the closure of the Brenner Pass" between Austria and Italy while speaking on the side-lines of the Hannover Messe 2016 in Hanover, Monday.

Renzi went on to say that "Austrian authorities have no other choice than to respect European laws", before adding that "if this doesn't happen, the European institutions will be the ones to take the imminent consequences."

SOT, Matteo Renzi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): "The question of the Brenner Pass is a simple one. There is not a single element that can justify the closure of the Brenner Pass. Period. Therefore, we think that the Austrian authorities have no other choice than to respect European laws. If this doesn't happen, the European institutions will be the ones to take the imminent consequences. Because Brenner is a symbol, because Brenner is a tool, a workplace for a lot of women and men. Germany, Austria and above all Northeast Italy are closely connected."
