Schloss Leopoldskron was built in 1693 by Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun to serve as his summer residence. In 1817, Emperor Franz I bought Schloss Leopoldskron and gave it to his wife Maria Ludovika who used the castle to host social events.
Maria's son Maximilian (later Emperor Maximilian I) grew up here and married Princess Charlotte of Belgium in 1857. Their wedding celebrations can still be seen in some of the rooms today.
The palace was also home to Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian empire, who was assassinated in 1914 - an event that triggered World War I.
The palace became a hotel for the first time during the ownership of Helene Sedlmayr from 1919 to 1938 and it is still owned by her descendants today.
Schloss Leopoldskron has hosted many important world leaders, including Eisenhower and Nixon. However, the most popular of Schloss Leopoldskron's guests is undoubtedly Julie Andrews (and her family).
The magnificent staircase in this hotel was used by Julie Andrews as she sang 'My Favourite Things' in "The Sound of Music". You can see the famous stairs on the first photo in the gallery. Schloss Leopoldskron is also where Maria and the children's costumes were created for "The Sound of Music".
Schloss Leopoldskron has 124 rooms, including 7 suites (and one royal suite decked out in red) and in June 2012, the hotel opened three new junior suites. These luxurious suites are located in a wing of the palace that was built only recently, but they still complement the historic building's architectural style.
