Mittenwald is a small peculiar village located in Bavaria, Germany, right next to the Austrian Tyrolean border. The village is known for three things, the Karwendel mountains, the coloreful painted houses and its violin making history.

The Karwendel are steep mountains known for the natural park. People come to hike here in the summer and for ski tours in winter.

Mittenwald is one of the legendary villages known for the Lüftlmalerei, which is a mural art form in Bavaria (Germany) and Tyrol (Austria). Fresh limestone colors are applied and painted in thin layers to create frescoes over house walls showing intricate details of local sceneries or saints. Other places known for this special art form are located nearby. This includes Oberammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Wallgau and Grainau.

The village is also known for its violin making traditions. Some of the most exclusive violins in the world are made in Mittenwald by hand and with a special expertise.
