Our 1000 mile TOLL FREE drive to the Alps

Join us as we set ourselves a challengeof not using the Toll roads to travel across Europe in the first part of our 6 week campervan road trip. Instead we head for the toll free roads and back lanes of rural France, Switzerland and Italy. All was going so well until we had to buy a vignette in Switzerland and pay for a mountain railway due to icy mountain passes.

The journey will definitely save us toll fees, but how much time and fuel will it cost? Up until this point, we have always chosen to use the toll roads as a quicker and easier alternative to the non-toll options. Have we made a sensible choice for this trip?

We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. We retired from teaching at the age of 51 in the summer of 2022. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travelling the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.
