The Land of ‘The Sound of Music’ - Day 6 of our Danube River cruise has us docking in Linz, Austria… but we are not staying here. Instead, we will head to Salzburg, Austria which is about 2 hours away. This city is the birthplace of Mozart and was made famous by ‘The Sound of Music’ where it was filmed. On the way, we make a stop at the halfway point of the drive in the utterly charming Austrian lake-side town of Mondsee. It is just a quick stop to see the Basilica St. Michael Church, which was the wedding church in the movie… the first of many film locations. The church is beautiful and you can see why this was chosen for the movie. And we were lucky to witness a children’s choir in practice. Also, we have our first views of the Alps!!! After a quick potty break, we were back on the road.

Once in Salzburg, we begin our walking tour in the historic center, famous for its religious history, Baroque architecture and as the birthplace of Mozart. We will see highlights such as the beautifully landscaped Mirabell Gardens, the Geteidegasse with its many decorative wrought iron guild signs, Residenz Square and the Old Market. After the official tour, we have time on our own to explore! And the first thing we do is head back to the market that we breezed through to grab some lunch! Here there are sausages, cheese, pretzels… and more. My choice for the day was a large pretzel with big chunks of salt and many slices of cheese… it was so good!

After doing a bit of shopping… and leaving the market with sausages and cheese to bring home, it’s time for something sweet. Mozart Balls are a chocolate made famous in Salzburg so we had to stop at the cafe where they were created. These delectable little balls of chocolate and pistachio were delicious and I enjoyed one with a cup of hot chocolate. Now it’s time to walk… there are so many beautiful squares and buildings in the city. And we need to see the city from atop… so we find the Funicular to ride to the top of the mountain to the Hohensalzburg Fortress which looms on the bluffs above. From here you have expansive views of the breathtaking scenery surrounding the city. And not just the city, but the Alps!! It is March, so there is snow on the mountains too. I live in very flat Louisiana, so mountains are fascinating to me! This was a true highlight! Now for the two hour bus ride back… it’s ok, I grabbed another pretzel for the ride!
