Slovenia is a small country in southern Central Europe that is bounded by Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Italy, and the Adriatic Sea. Slovenia had been ruled by many larger states since the Roman Empire and later by the Austrian Habsburgs. Slovenia achieved self-determination following World War I and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, eventually merging with Croatia and Serbia to form the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Slovenia was a constituent republic of Yugoslavia after World War II. It declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991, and the country now operates under parliamentary democracy. Slovenes, a South Slavic people, make up the majority of the country's population, but there are also other Slavs, Hungarians, and other minorities. Catholicism has historically dominated the country. That changed during the communist era, and the country is now primarily secular. The country has a significant gender gap in life expectancy, with women outliving men. Unmarried women have the majority of children. Slovenia transitioned more smoothly to a free-market economy than other former socialist European countries. Tourism and other services account for nearly two-thirds of the economy, while industry and construction account for about a third. Agriculture accounts for a minor portion of the economy. The country's economy is also supported by one of the world's most successful educational systems.

The country entered a recession in 2012 as a result of the European financial crisis, but its recovery has placed its developed economy among the richest of the Slavic countries in terms of GDP. Economic challenges include the country's relatively low worker productivity and low levels of foreign direct investment. According to the World Bank, Slovenia is one of the most forested countries in the world. Its population is one of Europe's least dense and fastest aging. Literature, art, and music all play important roles in the country's cultural life, despite the fact that very few of the country's artists have achieved international acclaim. Beethoven's "Sixth (Pastoral) Symphony" was premiered in Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital. Slovenia is a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Health Organization, and NATO.
