The city is the economic center of the Veltlin (Valtellina), an area that largely coincides with the great Alpine transversal valley of the Adda river. After the Veltlin had belonged to Graubünden since 1512, it joined the Cisalpine Republic in 1797. With the Congress of Vienna it came to Austria, which lost it with Lombardy in 1859 to the new Kingdom of Italy (then still Sardinia-Piedmont).
