Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic demon from Central European (especially Alpine) folklore who serves as the dark counterpart to Saint Nicholas. While St. Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts on December 5–6, Krampus punishes the naughty ones—swatting them with birch rods, stuffing them into his sack or basket, and (in the oldest tales) carrying them off to hell or drowning them in icy rivers.
