Welcome to the city centre and old town of Sankt Pölten!
Sankt Pölten is the capital city of the state of Lower Austria. It is known for its historical architecture, important administrative center in the region and cultural attractions.
Around 57,000 people live in Sankt Pölten, making it a smaller, manageable city.
In terms of its population, St. Pölten ranks ninth on the list of Austrian cities.
The area of today's St. Pölten was inhabited as early as the Neolithic Age, around the 3rd millennium BC. There are numerous finds from the painted pottery culture. Traces of the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Celts have also been found.
In June 1944 the first air raids by Allied bomber formations took place. The main destination was the train station. The heaviest bombings took place at Easter 1945. There were 591 dead, 142 of the 4,260 houses were completely destroyed, 233 more than half, another 2,701 light to medium. 3,500 people were homeless, and large parts of the infrastructure (e.g. gas and water supply) were affected. Overall, the war destroyed or badly damaged 39% of the building fabric in St. Pölten.
St. Pölten became the capital city of the state of Lower Austria with a parliamentary resolution of July 10, 1986.
