Our amazing Austrian adventures continues as we road-trip across the incredible nation!
*** This video was recorded during the summer, before Austria's rise in Covid-19 cases and curfew ***
Join us in the High Tauern National Park, at our first overnight stop up in the mountains, just outside a quaint little village - the perfect place to head to the incredible Krimml Waterfalls. We just couldn't get over the power and majesty of these falls... the noise, the force, the... amount of water! Wow, it really is something else! With a total height of 380 metres (1,247 feet), these are the highest waterfall in Austria. Located on the Krimmler Ache, a glacial stream whose flow varies greatly with season, near the village of the same name, also within the beautiful High Tauern National Park. We didn't quite hike to the top, but at the bottom, we got soaked!
Then we're off and over the breath-taking Gerlos Pass - a wild and winding road across the Austrian Alps between the Oberpinzgau region in the state of Salzburg and the Zillertal valley in Tyrol. This incredible road, with its elegant turns gently embedded into the mountainside by architect Franz Wallack (who also designed and built the incredible Grossglockner road), has a maximum gradient of 9% (so not too challenging!) and is gorgeously beautiful Alpine motorhome driving experience!
All this fun leads us into the famous Austrian city of Innsbruck - the capital of the Tyrol region and fifth-largest city in Austria. Innsbruck has a huge and varied history, but for many is really known an internationally renowned winter sports centre; hosting the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as well as the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. Our whistle-stop tour of the city winds up at the iconic Bergisel Ski Jump, which towers over the city, as much a famous winter sports venue as it is the symbol of this truly stunning city.
