Polls open in Austria in a presidential run-off that could bring to power the European Union's first far-right head of state.

The first results are expected to be out by 15 GMT before the final results are announced on Monday. The first round saw Norbert Hofer from the far-right Freedom Party win, with 35 percent of the vote. It was a blow to the Social Democrats and the conservative People’s Party, which were knocked out for the first time since the Second World War. Hofer is now locked in a close race with the Greens’ Van Der Bellen for presidency. The position is largely ceremonial in Austria, but the president can dismiss the cabinet and call snap elections, which could lead to a far-right parliament. This has raised alarm both in Austria and across Europe, considering the Freedom Party’s anti-migrant and Eurosceptic attitude.
