Arriving mid morning from Vienna we had time to explore a little of Melk before boarding our boat for a cruise down the Danube as far as Spitz. We climbed to the great Abbey, Stift Melk, for a quick look at this huge palace and into the stunning baroque abbey church. From the gardens we were able to gaze along the river. On board ship we passed the Schloss Shonbuhel (castle) as we entered the World Heritage region of the Wachau (Danube Gorge). High above Schloss Aggstein soon came into view. As we approached Spitz an der Donau yet another castle, the ruins of Hinterhaus, could be seen. As soon as we settled into our accommodation we explored the village. Climbing through the apricot trees and vineyards we reached the Tausedneimerberg with fabulous views over the very blue Danube. All that remained that day was to identify where we might try some of the Marillen Likor and the Marillen Knodel, featuring some of the local grown apricots.
