Alder is not only a problem in the Urseren valley of the Andermatt (Switzerland). The same phenomenon can be seen in France, Italy and Austria. When land is used less, alder runs rampant. The soil is over-fertilised and many plant species disappear, resulting in a less attractive landscape for tourism. It can also cause erosion on steep mountainsides.
