Stelvio is a mountain in Alto Adige, North of Italy. It is wedged between Austria and Switzerland. Most people there speak German at home and learn Italian at school.
In the 1800s the Austrians, who then occupied part of Italy decided to build a road to help military control of the occupied Italian territory.
After Italy was United and achieved independence the road was not neglected, but became a place for sporting challenges, including hillclimbs in horse and carriage, cars... the most famous events are bicycle races.
I ran uphill for 14km in a trail race, but did not reach the top due to a storm and the race course being cut short, by 7km.
So I decided to drive to the top straight after the race and share the experience.
